Getting Started
6 questions
How do I get started with Skinat Tuition? +
Getting started is straightforward. The first step is to book a free consultation — a short call where we learn about your child's year group, subjects, goals and any areas of concern. From there, we match your child with the right teacher and arrange their free trial lesson. No payment is required until after the trial.
Is there really a free first lesson? +
Yes — every child's first lesson is completely free, with no commitment required. This gives your child a chance to experience the teaching style, meet their teacher and see whether Skinat Tuition is the right fit. You only start paying once you're confident it's working.
What ages do you support? +
We support learners aged 5 to 18 across all key stages:
  • KS1 & KS2 — Ages 5–11 (Years 1–6)
  • KS3 — Ages 11–14 (Years 7–9)
  • GCSE — Ages 14–16 (Years 10–11)
  • Post-16 — A-Level, resits and further support
  • 11+ Preparation — typically Years 4–5
We also support home-educated learners at all of these stages.
Are lessons online or in person? +
All Skinat Tuition sessions are delivered online, using a secure, interactive platform. This allows students across the UK to access our qualified teachers from the comfort of home — without the need for travel. Sessions are fully live and interactive, not pre-recorded.
What happens during the free consultation? +
The free consultation is a short call — usually 15 to 20 minutes — where we discuss your child's current level, year group, subjects, and any specific concerns. We ask about their learning style, confidence, and goals so we can match them with the right teacher and build the right plan from day one.
How quickly can we start? +
In most cases, we can arrange a consultation within a few days and a trial lesson shortly after. Availability depends on the subject, year group and time slot required. Contact us and we'll let you know what's available as soon as possible.

How It Works
Lessons & Teaching
6 questions
How long are the lessons? +
Standard sessions are one hour. This gives enough time for review, new teaching, guided practice and a clear summary — without tiring younger learners. For some SEND learners or younger KS1 children, we may suggest slightly shorter sessions to begin with, building up as confidence grows.
Are your teachers properly qualified? +
Yes. Every teacher at Skinat Tuition is a trained UK educator with subject expertise and DBS clearance. We do not use university students or unqualified tutors. Our teachers have classroom experience and understand how children learn — not just how to explain content.
What does a typical lesson look like? +
Every lesson follows a clear, predictable structure:
  • Review of previous learning to reinforce and close gaps
  • Clear introduction to a new concept or topic
  • Modelled examples with step-by-step explanation
  • Guided practice with the teacher present
  • Independent questions at the right level
  • Summary of what was covered and next steps
This structure reduces anxiety and ensures every session is purposeful and measurable.
Will tuition clash with what school is teaching? +
Never. Our teachers ask about your child's current school topics in the first session and align all teaching accordingly. Parents consistently tell us their children feel more prepared and confident in class as a result. We reinforce and extend what school has introduced — we don't work against it.
Do you set homework? +
We can provide short, manageable practice tasks between sessions if parents request them — but we never set homework that overwhelms. Any follow-up work is purposeful, brief and directly linked to the lesson. Many families prefer not to add homework pressure, and that's completely fine.
How do you keep online lessons safe? +
All sessions take place on a secure, monitored platform. Every teacher holds DBS clearance. We follow strict safeguarding procedures throughout, and parents are always welcome to observe sessions. Child safety is embedded into everything we do — not treated as an afterthought.

What We Offer
Programmes
6 questions
Which subjects do you teach? +
We teach Maths, English and Science across all key stages. For younger learners, we also cover phonics, reading fluency and early writing. At GCSE level, we teach English Language, English Literature, Maths (Foundation and Higher) and all three science subjects — Biology, Chemistry and Physics — for both Combined and Triple Science.
Do you offer 11+ and grammar school preparation? +
Yes. Our 11+ preparation programme covers Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning for both GL and CEM exam formats. We typically work with children in Years 4 and 5, though we can start earlier or later depending on the child's starting point and chosen schools.
Do you help with SATs preparation? +
Yes. We offer dedicated SATs preparation for both Year 2 (KS1) and Year 6 (KS2). Our SATs support covers reading comprehension, arithmetic, reasoning and grammar — all approached calmly, with confidence-building at the centre. We never create unnecessary pressure around SATs.
What is the difference between small group and one-to-one tuition? +
Small group sessions involve 2–4 children of a similar level — offering a more affordable option while still providing focused, interactive teaching. One-to-one sessions are fully personalised, with the teacher's complete attention on your child. One-to-one tuition is particularly recommended for children with SEND needs, significant gaps, or very specific targets.
How often should my child have tuition? +
Most students start with one session per week and increase frequency if needed — particularly as exams approach. We'll recommend the right frequency during your consultation, based on the child's current level, goals and how much time they have available.
Can we change subjects or switch programmes? +
Absolutely. Your child's needs change over time — and so can your programme. Whether you want to add a subject, switch focus, or change the session type, just let us know and we'll adjust your plan accordingly. There are no extra fees for making changes.

SEND & EAL Support
5 questions
Do you support children with SEND needs? +
Yes. We have extensive experience supporting learners with ASD, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, working memory needs, processing difficulties, anxiety and school avoidance. Our SEND-friendly approach uses calm routines, chunked instructions, visual scaffolding and patient repetition — always in a low-pressure environment. Specialist support is included at no extra charge.
Does my child need a formal diagnosis to access SEND support? +
No formal diagnosis is needed. Many children benefit from SEND-friendly teaching even without official identification. If your child struggles in a standard classroom setting — whether or not they have a diagnosis — our calm, structured approach can help.
Can you work alongside an EHCP or IEP? +
Yes. If your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan or Individual Education Plan, we can align our teaching to those specific targets with parental permission. We are also happy to liaise with school SENCOs and provide progress updates that support annual reviews or reassessments.
Do you support EAL (English as an Additional Language) learners? +
Yes. We support EAL learners at all ages and key stages, using adapted vocabulary, visual supports, clear and simplified language, and a patient pace. We also support children who have combined SEND and EAL profiles — working carefully to separate language barriers from learning needs.
My child is very anxious about learning. Can you help? +
Absolutely. Many of the children we work with are anxious, school-avoidant or deeply unconfident. Our sessions are calm, predictable and entirely free from the social pressures of a classroom. There are no peers watching, no embarrassment and no pressure to keep up. Children can ask questions freely and take their time — which often leads to rapid improvements in engagement and confidence.

5 questions
Do you follow the National Curriculum for home-educated children? +
Only if you want us to. We work with families following the Full National Curriculum, a partial curriculum, a topic-based approach, a child-led approach, or an unschooling-inspired model. We adapt our tuition to integrate with what you're already doing — and offer as much or as little structure as you want.
Can you provide reports for Local Authority reviews? +
Yes. We provide detailed termly progress reports that outline achievements, next steps and how your child is performing in relation to curriculum expectations. These reports are suitable for Local Authority checks, portfolio evidence and your own planning and record-keeping.
Can we book daytime sessions? +
Yes. We offer daytime slots specifically for home-educated pupils — making it easier for families to plan learning around their routines without having to compete for evening or weekend availability. Contact us to discuss available times.
Can my child join if we have no fixed curriculum? +
Absolutely. Many of the families we work with don't follow a fixed curriculum. We begin by assessing your child's current level and interests, and build a plan from there — as structured or as flexible as you need. We never impose a rigid schedule if it doesn't suit your family.
Can you support home-educated students taking GCSEs? +
Yes. We support home-educated learners through the full GCSE process — from choosing the right exam board and tier, to booking external exam centres, planning a realistic two-year pathway and delivering structured subject teaching. We guide both students and parents through every step.

Progress & Reports
3 questions
How will I know if my child is making progress? +
After every session, you receive a short written update covering what was taught, how your child responded and the next steps. We also provide termly reports linked to National Curriculum expectations, so you can see measurable improvement over time. Parents often notice increased confidence in class within the first few weeks.
How long until I see improvement? +
Many parents notice improved confidence and engagement within the first two to four sessions. Measurable academic progress typically becomes visible over four to eight weeks of consistent tuition — though this varies by child, subject and starting point. We set realistic expectations at the outset and update you regularly on what we're seeing.
How do you communicate with parents? +
We provide written session updates after every lesson, termly progress reports, and clear guidance on how to support learning at home between sessions. Parents can also contact their child's teacher directly, and our admin team is available throughout the term to answer any questions.

GCSE & Exams
3 questions
Which exam boards do you teach? +
We teach across all major GCSE exam boards — AQA, Edexcel, OCR and Eduqas (WJEC). Every lesson is aligned to the specific exam board your child's school uses, so teaching is always targeted and never generic. We also cover both Foundation and Higher tiers in Maths and Science.
Can you help with GCSE resits? +
Yes. We work with Year 12 students and adults resitting GCSEs in Maths or English. We begin from where the student is, identify the specific gaps from the previous attempt, and focus on the most efficient route to the grade they need — with clear exam technique built in from day one.
Do you provide exam technique and past paper practice? +
Yes. Exam technique is built into every GCSE session. We use past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports to ensure students practise questions that reflect exactly what they will face on exam day — including how to read questions, structure answers, manage timing and show working clearly.
