A-Level, Higher and Advanced Higher Support: What Parents Should Ask

Parent Guides

When a student reaches advanced study, the right tuition needs to match the qualification, subject and course requirements. A-Level, Higher and Advanced Higher are not interchangeable labels: they belong to different education systems and have distinct specifications and assessment arrangements. Parents should check that any tutor understands the route their child is following.

Confirm the exact course and qualification

Before arranging lessons, establish the qualification name, subject, exam board or awarding body, current year of study and the topics being covered at school or college. In Scotland, Higher and Advanced Higher courses follow the Scottish qualification framework; A-Level courses are used in other parts of the UK and may vary by exam board. Do not assume a resource for one route will match another.

Questions to ask a prospective tutor

  • Which versions of this qualification and subject have you taught?
  • How will you identify the student’s current strengths and gaps?
  • How do you keep lesson content aligned with the current specification?
  • Can you support the type of assessment the student will take, including written, practical or coursework elements where relevant?
  • How will you provide feedback and review progress with the student?
  • What independent work should the student complete between lessons?

Look for depth, not just familiarity

Advanced courses often require students to connect ideas, evaluate evidence, solve unfamiliar problems and communicate precise arguments. A suitable tutor should be able to explain complex concepts clearly and help the student develop their own reasoning. Ask for examples of how a difficult topic might be taught and how understanding would be checked.

Agree realistic expectations

Tuition can clarify difficult material, provide guided practice and strengthen exam technique. It cannot replace attendance, independent study, teacher guidance or the student’s own effort. Be cautious of guaranteed grades or claims that a fixed number of lessons will produce a particular result.

A good starting point is a discussion between the student, parent and tutor about priorities, availability and the desired outcome. Review the plan regularly as school or college teaching progresses.
