Post-16 study often requires a significant change in how students learn. There is more detailed subject content, greater emphasis on independent reading and practice, and a stronger expectation that students will manage deadlines and identify gaps themselves. Tuition at this stage should support independence rather than make the student dependent on a tutor.
Move from being shown to working things out
At first, a tutor may model a difficult concept or demonstrate how to approach a question. Over time, the student should take more responsibility: explaining the concept, choosing a method, attempting a task and evaluating the result. The tutor’s role is to ask useful questions, challenge misconceptions and provide feedback at the right point.
Develop an independent study routine
- Break a course into topics and set weekly priorities.
- Use active recall: close the notes and explain or write what you remember.
- Practise applying knowledge through questions, essays or problem sets.
- Keep a record of mistakes and revisit topics that remain difficult.
- Plan assignments and revision around other commitments, with realistic breaks.
Use tuition to address specific barriers
A student may need help with a complex topic, academic writing, problem-solving, exam technique or planning a major assignment. Before lessons begin, agree the priority and identify what the student should be able to do independently afterwards. This makes the purpose of each session clear.
Keep the student involved
Parents can support Post-16 learners by discussing goals and helping them protect study time, but should avoid taking over the student’s planning. Encourage the student to communicate directly with the tutor, reflect on feedback and prepare questions before each lesson. This builds ownership and confidence.
Choosing a Post-16 tutor
Ask whether the tutor understands the relevant qualification and subject specification, how lessons will be tailored and how independent progress will be measured. For A Level, Higher and Advanced Higher routes, requirements differ, so course-specific experience matters. A good tutor should be clear about what tuition can and cannot provide.
